Portescap's presence in India dates back to 1976 when it operated as Tandon Motors, specializing in the production of high-quality motors for floppy discs. Following its acquisition by Kollmorgen in 1996 and subsequent integration into Portescap in 2004, the company underwent strategic reorientation, with the Mumbai facility becoming a focal point for Portescap’s manufacturing operations.
Portescap demonstrated its commitment to innovation by establishing a research and development center in India between 2003 and 2004, initially staffed by 10 individuals and later expanding to a team of 50. In 2010, Portescap furthered its strategic objectives by relocating its entire brushless DC motor manufacturing line to Mumbai; this was quickly followed by expanding the facility’s manufacturing capabilities to include can stack stepper and disc magnet stepper motors in 2012.
In 2020, Portescap was pivotal in addressing the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic by supplying motors worldwide for ventilators and medical equipment. To meet the surge in demand, the Mumbai facility expanded operations, implementing round-the-clock production in three shifts. In 2021, another significant milestone was achieved by establishing a stator manufacturing unit for Portecap’s brushless DC motor line.
Portescap's current presence in India encompasses a robust manufacturing footprint, as well as engineering, R&D, and testing and quality capabilities. Highlights include:
• | 220+ associates and 900+ operators |

Portescap Supports the Make in India InitiativeThe Make in India initiative was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September 2014 to establish India as a global manufacturing hub, as well as to “facilitate investment, foster innovation, enhance skill development, protect intellectual property & build a best-in-class manufacturing infrastructure." This initiative has inspired both manufacturing and infrastructure investment, as well as enhanced other facets of economic growth.
With our R&D and manufacturing operations based in Mumbai, Portescap is well-positioned to contribute to the Make in India initiative, offering miniature motor technologies and engineering expertise critical to solving the motion needs of a spectrum of end markets.
