Automatic Aircraft Window Shade

A major airline uses automatic, reliable and simple to operate passenger window shades to darken or block light. The motors that perform this function must adhere to stringent design requirements for aircraft electronics, which include low weight, high reliability and low power consumption.

A key aircraft industry shade manufacturer needed a motor source to fit these shade requirements and enlisted the Portescap Quick Prototype Team to develop a potential option. The initial solution of an Athlonix™ 16DCT series brush DC motor with R16 gearhead fit the requirements of the application. Additional motor features were added to ensure accurate movement and hold position, including an encoder, brake and EMI filtering. Portescap’s customization experience enabled them to develop a complete solution for the customer, meeting all performance and environmental requirements. Portescap’s ability to quickly meet these requirements lifted them above the competition to become the chosen supplier.
