Fusion Splicer
A leading manufacturer of fusion splicers needed a cost-effective solution to drive an automatic jacket stripper module. Fusion splicers employ a heat process to join separate glass optical fibers end to end. The automatic stripper removes the polymer coating around the optical fiber in preparation for fusion splicing. Since glass fiber is fragile, any handling operation must be precise. The motor must operate at specified speeds without any speed fluctuations to avoid fiber damage.
Portescap provided a customized Athlonix™ 16N78 brush DC motor with a B16 gearhead to meet the rigid speed requirements. Through an iterative process, the motor was customized to operate at the desired speed with minimal noise. In addition, there was no deviation in speed when applied to the stripper module.
The Portescap solution provided a drop-in replacement for the competitor motor and delivered a comparable performance at a lower cost.
