Electronic Expansion Valve

An electronic expansion valve (EEV) is an integral component of an aircraft’s Environmental Control System (ECS), particularly in its air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Tasked with precisely controlling refrigerant flow, the EEV enables efficient temperature regulation within the cabin.

An aircraft manufacturer recently approached Portescap for help in identifying a micro motor for its electronic expansion valve. The application demanded a motor that offered precise positioning control to regulate flow through the valve, could perform reliably in high temperatures up to 120°C, and was able to withstand exposure to refrigerants.

Portescap identified its 20M020D can stack stepper as an ideal solution for the EEV due to its inherent precision control and compact footprint. In addition to tailoring the motor to meet the required temperature range, a customized mounting plate and output pinion were implemented to align with the customer’s needs. The seamless transition from a standard COTS motor to a fully customized motion solution also accelerated development, keeping the customer on schedule and within budget.
