Humanoid Robot

Humanoid robots are making headlines for their ability to perform human-like tasks imitating human motion, including speaking, recognizing faces and objects, and displaying capabilities to walk and dance with impressive balance. In the field of education, humanoid robots offer hands-on learning opportunities for engineering, programming, and logical thinking; they similarly serve as supportive companions in children’s treatment and physical rehabilitation in healthcare and behavioral settings. In many cases, these robots incorporate 20+ degrees of freedom. Central to achieving these 20 axes of motion are the electric actuators, driven by miniature motors, which must be lightweight and compact to ensure the robot’s agility, precise motion, and long-lasting operation.
A robot designer recently approached Portescap to optimize the motion solution for their humanoid robot platform while ensuring compatibility with their preferred drive (controller). After analyzing the motion elements, the Portescap team identified the 16DCT AthlonixTM precious metal brush DC motor as the ideal motion solution. A key factor in this selection was the 16DCT’s high efficiency, which allowed cooler motor operation, increased power density, and extended the robot’s battery life.
The motor’s high-power density enabled a 6-8% reduction in motor diameters while providing the necessary torque, while its unique graphite commutation system ensured longer motor life and greater durability. Motor inductances were also adjusted to match drive requirements, ensuring optimal speed and torque characteristics. The designers valued Portescap’s focus on customization and collaboration throughout the entire development process.
