Application Torque Range
In our blog post DC Coreless Speed vs Torque Curves, we talked about how to read speed vs torque curves and the linear relationship of speed and torque for a DC motor. When comparing speed vs torque curves for various motors, the range of torque required in the application should be identified to ensure a proper comparison. The curves will show the torque capability of the motor over the entire speed range, but the application torque range is typically limited to a narrow band.
The winding of the DC motor will dictate the slope and end points for the torque curve, at rated voltage. By comparing different motors (diameter, length, winding), you will see slopes of the curves that vary with some producing higher torque at lower speeds while others capable of producing torque at higher end speeds. It can be misleading to think that a motor that can produce torque at higher speeds is better in your application, since the curve looks appealing as it extends farther out on the speed axis. But if your application requirement does not require those higher speeds, a motor with a sharper slope may be more appropriate. Comparing the motor performance within your application torque range gives you a more accurate comparison and will help you select the optimum motor.
