Selecting the Optimum Motion Technology for Your Application: Type

February 14, 2020
application-type

The type of application being designed will dictate different factors be considered for the motion solution.  Will the product be stationary?  Is the product mobile - being moved by an apparatus or on a person?  The typical usage of the product brings forth different factors to prioritize for your motion solution.

For a stationary product, the power primarily comes from a wall outlet.  This provides a higher power available to drive the motor, increasing the potential output from the motor (keeping the duty cycle in consideration).  Since the product is not designed to move, the size and weight of the motion solution may not be critical allowing flexibility in the diameter and length of the motor.  This can translate to improved output or throughput of the product.

A mobile or ambulatory product primarily draws power from a battery, making the current draw of the motion solution a high priority.  The lower the current draw (while meeting the required performance), the longer the battery will last between charges.  Also, size and weight become a priority, especially for a product that is carried by or worn on a person.  Keeping the power requirements (voltage and current) for the motion solution low will allow a smaller battery pack to be used, further reducing the size and weight of the product.

The Portescap application engineers can discuss the differences in stationary and mobile applications and the advantages of different motor technologies.  Additional discussion points, including integrating the motion solution into the drive mechanism, can also yield the optimum product design.  Engage Portescap today to find your ideal motion solution.
