Meet AREBO, a Collaboration of Innovation

March 10, 2022

Though small in stature, mini motors are mighty in impact! The role that miniature motors play in powering critical applications across the globe is large, especially in the development devices and applications within the medical industry. As a leading provider of mini motors, we continually strive to live our value of saving, improving, and enhancing lives by not only developing miniature motion solutions for medical needs, but by working with universities across the globe to develop new, innovative technologies. This investment in our collective future is personified by Portescap’s CSR (corporate social responsibility) partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT Madras), a leading educational institution in India.

Our CSR partnership is focused on bringing unique rehabilitative, robotic solutions to individuals with various arm impairments. One such robotic solution is AREBO, the “Arm Rehabilitation Robot.” This robot is aimed at assisting individuals with arm impairments resulting from conditions like arthritis, stroke, and Parkinson's disease with arm movement, thereby improving their quality of life. Coupled with the right exercise sessions, AREBO will be an invaluable tool to improve a patient’s mobility while simultaneously assisting therapists in remotely monitoring the performance of the user, which will help in planning their therapy accordingly.

Prof. Sujatha Srinivasan, a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Madras, is a renowned expert on prosthetics and orthotics and is the leader of the AREBO project. Here as she provides an overview of what the Portescap - IIT Madras CSR partnership has meant in terms of developing AREBO:

At Portescap, we're incredibly proud to nurture and support such an innovative, much-awaited project that is poised to positively impact the lives of many. New technologies such as AREBO will not only help to improve lives, such as improving therapy for patients after a stroke, but will continue to illustrate how partnerships between industry and educational leaders can result in life-changing innovations.
