Motor longevity is typically a key consideration during the initial phases of device design. But what if the device is intended to complete its operation just once? In such cases, the focus shifts towards meeting performance requirements with optimal cost-effectiveness and reliability. Let's dive into the ins and outs of this selection process, as well as the key factors to consider when choosing the ideal motor technology to power one-time use devices:
- Performance (Torque and Speed). The device will have specific performance targets, including torque and speed, that must be met. These requirements dictate the suitable motor technology and size needed to achieve the desired output. Generally, stepper motors excel at low speeds, DC coreless motors perform well at medium speeds, and brushless DC motors are ideal for high-speed applications. Determining the required torque will further guide the selection process by specifying the motor's diameter and length.
- Specifications. Motor specifications typically include ratings for continuous operation, designed to withstand hundreds of hours of use. However, since the application operates only once, the motor's on-time can be significantly lower than designed. This opens up the possibility of utilizing a motor size or technology that can meet the performance requirements for the brief duration of operation. There are many factors to consider, so a motor expert should be consulted to review the details.
- Cost. Given that the device will only operate once, selecting a cost-optimized motor becomes a priority. Stepper motors generally offer the lowest cost, followed by DC coreless motors, with Brushless DC motors typically being the most expensive option. While cost optimization is desirable, it's crucial to ensure that the chosen motor technology can still meet the performance requirements to ensure successful operation.
- Reliability. In cases of medical devices, the motor must perform its designated task without fail, making motor reliability paramount. This means that it’s essential to select a motor with tolerances aligned with the device's requirements. Too wide of a tolerance band may result in improper operation, emphasizing the importance of precision in motor selection.
