Mini Stepper Motor

Can Stack Motors and Disc Magnet Motors

Miniature stepper motors provide an engineer with the desired flexibility for meeting motion control requirements in a given application. Various diameters and lengths for both can stack and disc magnet mini step motors allow for a broad range of options to meet the desired torque and speed. Customization options including magnets and winding voltage provide further ability to optimize the output of the stepper motor within the mechanical space available in the application.

The miniature stepper motor is an electromechanical device that converts electrical pulses into discrete mechanical movements, and therefore can be operated directly from a microprocessor via a pulse train input. The shaft of a stepper motor rotates in discrete step increments when electrical command pulses are applied to it in the proper sequence. Rotation of the motor is directly related to these applied input pulses in several ways. The sequence of the applied pulses is directly related to the direction of motor shaft rotation. Shaft rotation speed is directly related to the frequency of the input pulses, and length of rotation is directly related to the number of input pulses applied. Error is non-cumulative as long as step integrity remains. Step angles for Can stack motors are usually 3.6 degree to 18 degree (or 100 steps per revolutions to 20 steps per revolutions).

Can stack motion technology focuses on simplicity. This mini stepper motor uses the simplest of techniques and designs to create an effective solution for many applications, where reasonable accuracy and moderate torque are required. Portescap can trace its stepper heritage back to the invention of the can stack step motor. This is one reason why we offer one of the widest ranges of motors in the industry today, ranging from 15 mm to 60 mm in the permanent magnet family. Can stack motors are usually 2 phase in construction, consisting of two stator cups with claw tooth poles formed around a winding creating each half of the motor. The rotor has the same number of pole pairs as the stator. The poles on each stator cup are constructed to be a half a pole pitch apart. With two coils, this means there can be 4 discrete positions per pole pitch. A 2-phase motor, for example, with 12-pole pairs in each stator / coil sector will therefore have 48 steps per revolution or 7.5 degrees per step.

Disc magnet motors provide exceptional dynamic performance unparalleled by any other stepper in the market. The unique thin disc magnet enables finer step resolutions in the same diameter, significantly higher acceleration and greater top end speed than conventional steppers. Disc magnet motors excel in applications that require the precision of a stepper and the speed/acceleration of a brushless DC motor. Closing the loop provides a competitive advantage against a servo solution.

Our line of disc magnet stepper motors offer a wide range of possibilities which are unequalled by any other mini step motor. Their advanced technology developed by Portescap allows for a truly exceptional dynamic performance. The rotor of these motors consists of a rare earth magnet having the shape of a thin disc which is axially magnetized.

Using a specific magnetization technique allows for a higher number of magnetic poles to be optimized for the motor size, allowing for smaller step angles than a conventional two-phase permanent magnet stepper motor.

Their low moment of inertia results in an outstanding acceleration and dynamic behavior. These features, together with high peak speeds, mean that any incremental movement can be carried out in the shortest possible time. Their low inertia also means high start/stop frequencies allowing them to save time during the first step and solve certain motion problems without applying a ramp.
