Definition

Speed of a motor is the magnitude of the rotational velocity of the motor shaft. In a motion application, speed of the motor dictates how fast the axis rotates – the number of complete revolutions per unit time. Applications vary in their speed requirement, depending on what is being moved and the coordination with the other components of the machine. A balance must be achieved between speed and torque, as motors typically generate less torque when run at higher speeds.

Solution Overview

We address speed requirements during our design process by creating an optimum coil (generally known as windings) and magnet configurations. In some designs, the coil rotates based on motor construction. Creating a motor design that eliminates the iron being combined with the coil results in higher speeds. The inertia of these high speed motors is reduced dramatically, increasing the acceleration (responsiveness) as well. In some designs the magnet rotates with the shaft. Since the magnet is the contributing factor for the motor inertia, developing a different design from a standard cylindrical magnet is required. Lowering the inertia drives higher speed as well as acceleration.

Portescap has designed high speed motors for our brushless DC and brush DC technologies, with self-supporting high-density rotor coils. The ironless nature of brush DC coils allows for both high acceleration and higher speeds, especially compared to brush DC motors with an iron-core design.
